Brightspace Admin Deployment Guide

Register Play With ASL as an LTI 1.3 tool in D2L Brightspace. Written for LMS administrators. Teachers have their own quick-start.

Overview

Welcome. This guide walks a D2L Brightspace administrator through registering Play With ASL: School Edition as an LTI 1.3 tool, then hands off to a teacher for the first placement. Plan on one sitting for the admin half; the teacher half takes a few minutes.

Play With ASL is certified for 1EdTech LTI Advantage Complete (LTI 1.3 Core, Deep Linking 2.0, Assignment and Grade Services 2.0, Names and Role Provisioning Services 2.0). You can confirm the listing at https://site.imsglobal.org/certifications/playwithasl.

Registration is a short manual process in Brightspace’s Register Tool: you enter our tool details and endpoints, turn on three message types, choose placements and services, and save. Brightspace then generates a Client ID and Deployment ID, and you send those two values to us at the end. The endpoint details are under OIDC, JWKS, and redirect URLs.

Prerequisites

  • A Brightspace administrator account with access to Admin Tools → Manage Extensibility → LTI Advantage. Register Tool lives there, so this part needs an admin rather than a teacher.
  • A teacher and a course for the first placement once we confirm your registration.
  • A few minutes at the end to send us two values, Client ID and Deployment ID, plus your Brightspace URL. Institution-specific values shows where each one comes from.
  • The registration method is Standard (manual); Dynamic Registration is not available yet. (If you also run Canvas, the Canvas guide follows a different flow.)

Register the Tool

  1. Sign in as a Brightspace administrator.
  2. Go to Admin Tools → Manage Extensibility → LTI Advantage → Register Tool.
  3. Enter the name, description, and domain from Basic Tool Information.
  4. Enter the login, launch, redirect, and keyset addresses from OIDC, JWKS, and redirect URLs, exactly as they appear there.
  5. Turn on three message types:
    • LtiResourceLinkRequest
    • LtiDeepLinkingRequest
    • LtiSubmissionReviewRequest
  6. Choose the placements Course Navigation, Content, and Assignment. Those are the three we recommend.
  7. Turn on the services Assignment and Grade Services, Names and Role Provisioning Services, and Deep Linking.
  8. Under Privacy, send User Name, Email, Role, and User ID. User Image is optional.
  9. Save, then copy the Client ID and Deployment ID Brightspace generates.
  10. Send us the Client ID and Deployment ID, plus your Brightspace URL, through Contact or support@playwithasl.com. We register your school on our side and confirm by email; launches start working once that registration is in place.

Enter both redirect URIs. The Redirect URIs entry has two addresses, one ending in /lti/launch and one ending in /lti/deep-linking. Register both; the second is also the Deep Linking address in the table.

Institution-specific values

Brightspace generates the Client ID and Deployment ID when you save the registration; copy them straight from Brightspace. Your Brightspace URL tells us your issuer, which follows the pattern in the table. Those three things are everything we need to register your school.

Teachers: Add the First Assignment

Once we confirm your registration, a teacher takes it from here. This is the part that proves the setup end to end, so have a teacher do it rather than the admin.

The teacher adds Play With ASL from Content with the Curriculum Wizard, picks an activity, and sends the link into the course. Students launch into the School Edition app; they do not play inside Brightspace. None of the registration values on this page are needed for that part.

Open the Brightspace Teacher Quick-Start

Covers: Add Existing → Curriculum Wizard → Add to Course, the student handoff page (QR code or magic link, or Open Play With ASL), and where scores land in Manage Grades. Send that link to your teachers.

Check It Worked

Four things tell you the setup is good:

  • The tool opens from a course without an error.
  • A teacher launch and a student launch both succeed.
  • With Deep Linking, the teacher can pick content and a student can open it.
  • With Assignment and Grade Services turned on, a score shows up in the Brightspace gradebook.

Your school’s first teacher placement is the real confirmation. Please let us know how it goes, either way.

Troubleshooting

Common Brightspace LTI issues
Launch fails One of the registered addresses differs from ours, most often a redirect URI or the keyset URL. Compare each field in Register Tool with OIDC, JWKS, and redirect URLs, including HTTPS and the domain, then save and launch again. If everything matches, contact us and we will check that your Brightspace URL, Client ID, and Deployment ID are registered on our side.
Grades don’t sync Assignment and Grade Services is turned off, or the launch arrived without AGS context. Turn the service on in Register Tool and launch again from the assignment. If scores still stay out of the gradebook, contact us and we will trace the launch with you.
Framing / cookie issues The tool runs over HTTPS only, and some browsers restrict third-party cookies inside embedded frames. Check that the launch is HTTPS, then try a browser that allows third-party cookies in frames. If the frame still stays blank, contact us with the browser name and we will help narrow it down.
